Join this non-partisan postcard writing party to boost voter turnout in the 2025 Virginia General Election!
We’ll be writing non-partisan postcards to encourage Black voters in Virginia to participate in the November election — for Governor, Lt. Governor, and the House of Delegates. This outreach is part of the statewide Reclaim Our Vote campaign from the Center for Common Ground, focusing on voters who are often overlooked by traditional efforts.
These postcards are strictly non-partisan — no candidates, no parties — just a friendly, empowering reminder to vote.

Postcard Writing Is the Heart of This Event
Help us plan! Please email us to let us know how many postcards you’ll commit to writing, ideally in multiples of 30 (e.g., 30, 60, 90). Reserve your postcards at: WilliamsburgJCCIndivisible@gmail.com
Postcards are provided free of charge; you just supply the stamps.
Can’t stay to write with us? No problem — pick up your packet and complete it at home.
Don’t want to write but still want to help? Donations of postcard stamps are appreciated!
** Some of you may have already ordered postcards From Karen S. for the Reclaim Our Vote campaign. This postcard party is a separate unconnected event -- same cause, but spearheaded by Indivisible and if you come to the party, please request postcards to be written at the party from WilliamsburgJCCIndivisible@gmail.com ***

Important Presentation by Virginia Organizing
We’ll begin the event with a short talk by Meghan McNamara, Co-Organizing Director of Virginia Organizing and local chapter leader.
Virginia Organizing is a non-partisan, grassroots organization empowering local communities to address key issues — with a local focus on immigration and ICE-related concerns.

About Reclaim Our Vote's Postcards
Reclaim Our Vote is a volunteer-led, grassroots campaign to increase BIPOC voter turnout through non-partisan postcarding, phone banking, and texting. In partnership with local organizations and Democracy Centers, ROV engages voters with respectful and relevant messaging about upcoming elections.

Every non-partisan postcard makes a difference. Let us know how many you’ll write — and join us on Sunday, September 7!

Building a New Library
The City Council of Williamsburg meets on August 11 for a Work Session and will discuss the proposed new public library to replace the current building on Scotland Street.
On the agenda is "Presentation and Discussion of the Public Input Processes and Recommendations of the Library Evaluation Committee - Sandy Towers, Williamsburg Regional Library Director."
You can email council@williamsburgva.gov with your thoughts.

Scholarships
Scholarship Awards
On June 1, Board members Denise Koch and Maryann Simpson presented our $1,500 scholarships at the Williamsburg Community Foundation Scholarship Awards Ceremony.

This year’s recipients are:
Jillian Hunt (Lafayette HS) – heading to Radford University
William Holt (Warhill HS) – heading to UVA–Wise
Zachary Matyjas (Jamestown HS) – heading to UVA

All three students wrote to us with gratitude and shared their plans for the future showing that they clearly embraced the main criteria for our scholarships: pursuing studies in civics, government, politics, law, or a related field.

We were delighted that all three joined us at our Annual Meeting on June 12, where we introduced them to our members and invited them to become part of our League. We wish Jillian, Will, and Zach every success as they begin their college journeys in the coming weeks.

From Renee Hawthorne, Board Member - Hospitality Chair:
Back to League on October 30
I would like to announce our Members Back to League Meeting which will take place at 4pm on Thursday, October 30th at Legacy Hall. The program and agenda will be forthcoming as the date approaches. You can bet it will be yet another great informative meeting!

Additionally, I am hoping to have a few volunteers to help with setup, food, and cleanup. Volunteers will be asked to arrive at 2:30 pm with the intent to have tables ready, food and drink out, and ready to receive attendees by 3:30 pm. We will need 3-4 more volunteers to augment the fruit, cheese, and dessert platters I plan to purchase. If you already want to volunteer to bring a food item, just let us know at lwvwacommunications@gmail.com. Otherwise, there will be plenty of time to sign up!

I want to call out the superb job Becky Andrews did as Hospitality Director in the past years! Every meeting (including the annual Christmas party and all the Great Decisions lectures) were flawlessly executed. Becky made it all look easy!! She has also generously given her time to answer questions and provide advice.

Looking forward to the FUN and CHALLENGE as well as having a super successful League year!

From Our Great Decisions Team:
Great Decisions
Great Decisions 2026 will take place at the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalist site at 3051 Ironbound Rd. More information will come out when we announce our program and take signups. We relocated because of the plans for library renovation and construction.

Read Any Good Books Lately?

Did you know that the League has a book club that meets quarterly?
Our next meeting is November 6 at 4:30pm to discuss Edward Abbey’s Desert Solitaire.

We hope you can come. For directions, just email lwvcommunications@gmail.com. Attend as many or as few meetings as you like.

Some Background
We have read so many informative books that we might not have otherwise read! We try to cover issues relevant to our lives today: voting rights, environmental issues, political issues, racism, gun control, wealth, and more. Members nominate and choose the books by consensus. We meet in a league member's home and generally have a group of 8 to 10 attend.
Our discussions are lively and insightful. Started in 2020 by the then newly elected vice-president, Susan Bivins, we met on Zoom. Now we get together in person.

It’s a great way to get to know other members and share your thoughts! Here's some titles we have read recently:
2024: The Presidents and the People by Corey Brettschneider; The Gun Dilemma by Robert Spitzer; Age of Revolutions by Fareed Zakaria; On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century by Timothy Snyder
2025: The Hidden Globe: How Wealth Hacks the World; Holding it Together: How Women Became America’s Safety Net by Jessica Colarco; American Gospel by Jon Meacham
