Guest Essay: Who's Buying Democracy?

The relationship between Silicon Valley's wealthiest technologists and American democracy deserves closer scrutiny — from voters of every party.

Over the past decade, a small group of tech billionaires has funded an ideological movement explicitly hostile to democratic governance. Their manifestos celebrate CEO-style rule, dismiss voting rights as obstacles to efficiency, and treat public accountability as an enemy of progress.

Members of Congress have done little to rein in or regulate the technology of Artificial Intelligence. Many have invested heavily in companies profiting from mass surveillance contracts and unregulated cryptocurrency. In fact, a bipartisan vote passed cryptocurrency legislation which critics warned would entrench private financial interests in public policy.

The League of Women Voters was founded on a simple premise: informed citizens, fully participating, are democracy's best defense. That premise is being tested. The mechanisms of accountability — transparency, elections, a free press — still work.

But only if we pay attention

Americas Tapestry

America’s Tapestry at the Muscarelle

Exhibition: America’s Tapestry: 13 Colonies. 13 Stories. 1 Nation.
Dates: June 19–September 6, 2026
Location: Muscarelle Museum of Art, Williamsburg
Learn more at the Muscarelle →

America’s Tapestry: 13 Colonies. 13 Stories. 1 Nation. explores the struggle for independence through 13 embroidered panels, one for each original colony. The exhibition highlights familiar and lesser-known Revolutionary-era stories, including the contributions of women, enslaved people, Indigenous people, Black Loyalists, Black and Indigenous soldiers, and people of African descent from Saint-Domingue — now Haiti.

Among the stories featured are Abenaki people in New Hampshire; Black and Indigenous soldiers in the 1st Rhode Island Regiment; Black Loyalists who made their way to Nova Scotia; women supporting General Washington’s troops in New Jersey; enslaved men, Welsh miners, and convicts mining lead for musket balls in Virginia; and the Chasseurs Volontaires de Saint-Domingue, a Creole militia unit that fought in the Battle of Savannah in 1779.

As the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of American independence, this exhibition offers a broader and more inclusive view of Revolutionary-era history than many earlier commemorations. It is a local opportunity to reflect on the people, labor, conflict, and civic action that helped shape the nation.

Advocacy

Advocacy Roundup

Recent state and national developments touch several issues followed by the League, including voting rights, voter privacy, reproductive freedom, climate policy, campaign finance, and immigration.

Virginia Updates

Voter privacy and voting rights: The League of Women Voters of Virginia has joined LWVUS and partner Leagues in litigation challenging the consolidation and use of sensitive personal information in ways that could affect voter rolls and voting access.

Access to contraception: Virginia has enacted statutory protections prohibiting state and local governments from restricting an individual’s ability to obtain or use contraceptives.

Climate and energy policy: Virginia is rejoining the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, a multistate program designed to reduce power plant emissions while generating revenue for energy efficiency and flood resilience.

Reproductive freedom amendment: A legal challenge to Virginia’s pending reproductive rights amendment is moving forward, with possible implications for other pending constitutional amendments.

National Updates

LWVUS continues to track litigation and statements concerning voter data, mail voting, campaign finance, immigration enforcement, detention conditions, and access to reproductive health care.
