Voting in Virginia & Year-Round Resources
Last updated: October 28, 2025
Voting in Virginia is straightforward once you know the steps. Make sure your voter registration matches your
current name and address, then choose how you’ll vote.
Three ways to vote
- In person on Election Day at your assigned polling place (6:00am–7:00pm).
- Early in person at designated locations in your locality before Election Day.
- By mail (absentee) — request a ballot and return it by mail or to a secure drop box; you can track its status.
For in-person voting, bring an acceptable ID or sign an ID Confirmation Statement. Special options exist for students,
voters with disabilities, and military/overseas voters. If eligibility is in question, you may cast a provisional ballot,
which is counted once eligibility is confirmed. Individuals with felony convictions must have civil rights restored before registering.
How to Vote in Virginia
Choose one of the three voting methods listed above — in person on Election Day, early in person, or by mail —
