Our History
The League of Women Voters was founded nationally in 1920 following the women’s suffrage movement. Our local League began in 1962 and became the first integrated League in Virginia before being officially recognized in 1965.
Today, we continue that tradition of civic participation and public service.

Building a More Inclusive League
The League’s early history reflected many of the exclusions of its time. Today, the League is committed to building a more inclusive organization and removing barriers to civic participation. We value the varied identities, experiences, and perspectives that strengthen our democracy and strive to ensure that everyone can participate fully in civic life.
Governance
The League of Women Voters of Williamsburg Area is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. For questions about League leadership, programs, membership, donations, or operations, please use our Contact page. Messages are reviewed and forwarded to the appropriate officer, program chair, or Board member when needed.
Part of a Larger League
