Voter Rights and Election Protection

Every eligible voter has the right to cast a ballot — free from intimidation, discrimination, or interference.

At the Polls

  • You have the right to vote if you are registered and appear at the correct polling place.
  • You have the right to vote if you are in line when the polls close — stay in line until you cast your ballot.
  • You may ask a poll worker for help using voting equipment or marking your ballot.
  • If your name is not on the pollbook, you have the right to request a provisional ballot.
  • If someone challenges your eligibility, you still have the right to vote a provisional ballot.
  • Voter intimidation or obstruction is illegal. Poll watchers may observe but cannot interfere or question voters directly.

Voter ID and Assistance (Virginia)

  • Virginia accepts many forms of ID: driver’s license, voter card, student ID, utility bill, paycheck, or government document with your name and address.
  • If you forget your ID, you may still vote by signing an ID Confirmation Statement or casting a provisional ballot.
  • Voters with disabilities or language needs may have assistance from a person of their choice (other than an employer or union representative).

If You Are Approached by Law Enforcement or Federal Agents

  • You still have the full right to vote free of intimidation or interference, regardless of who is present at the polling place.
  • Federal agents or law enforcement officers do not determine who may vote. Their presence should not stop you from casting your ballot.
  • If an officer or agent questions you, ask for their name and agency, remain calm, and assert your right to vote.
  • Note the time, location, and details of any encounter, and report it immediately using the hotlines below.

Report Problems or Intimidation

Under federal and state law, it is illegal to intimidate, threaten, or coerce any person for voting or attempting to vote. If you experience problems, note the time, location, and any identifying details, and report them immediately.
