PRIMARY ELECTION

Virginia has scheduled a dual primary election on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.

  • Primary elections choose party nominees for the November general election, including candidates for U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate.
  • Voters in Virginia’s 1st Congressional District who choose to vote in the Democratic primary will have a contest for U.S. House of Representatives, with seven candidates seeking the Democratic nomination.
  • Voters who choose to vote in the Republican primary will have a contest for U.S. Senate, with three candidates seeking the Republican nomination.
  • The races on your ballot depend on where you live and which party primary ballot you choose.
  • Election Day polls are open from 6 AM to 7 PM.

Anyone in line at 7 PM will be allowed to vote.

Candidates on the Ballot

According to the Virginia Department of Elections candidate list, the following candidates are seeking nomination in primary races that may appear on Williamsburg-area ballots. Candidates are listed alphabetically by last name.

Democratic Primary — U.S. House of Representatives, Virginia’s 1st Congressional District

Republican Primary — U.S. Senate

Virginia voters do not register by political party. If both parties hold primaries on the same day, voters may choose one party primary ballot.

Important Dates
  • Friday, July 24 — Last day to register or update your registration and vote a regular ballot
  • Friday, July 24 — Last day to apply for a ballot to be mailed to you
  • June 18 through August 1 — Early voting in person
  • Tuesday, August 4 — Primary Election Day
